5k winners Ed Stowe and Samantha Bock show off their trophies.

On the morning of Sunday, January 14th, the Ecology Graduate Student Organization organized a 5k run/walk in memory of former graduate student John K. Spencer. Over $420 was raised and donated to the UGA River Basin Center’s John Spencer Research Grant Program to help other graduate students achieve their goals.  John Spencer’s father, Tracy Spencer, participated in the race among many others in the local community who came out to support.  Ed Stowe and Samantha Bock were the first to beat the chilly weather and finish the race with a win.

John’s family and friends joined Ecology alumni in town for the Odum 50/10 celebration for the race. Shown here (from left) are John’s step-brother, John’s father, and race organizers Kelsey Solomon and Nate Tomczyk.

The 2nd annual John Spencer Memorial 5K Run/Walk drew quite a crowd, despite the frigid temperatures.

In 2017 the RBC inaugurated a new small grants program for graduate students, funded by a contribution from Kathelen Amos in honor of her son, John Spencer. In his time at UGA, John researched the relationship of stream conductivity and stream macroinvertebrates with River Basin Center Scientific Director, Seth Wenger. The RBC has begun a fundraising campaign to ensure that it can continue to award at least 1-2 competitive grants of this size each year. If you would like to contribute, please use this link. Donations to this fund are being accepted through the Ecology Fund; please include “RBC Spencer Grants” in the Special Instructions/Comments field on page 2 of the form.
