Caitlin Conn featured in UGA Graduate Magazine
The River Basin Center’s very own Ph.D. student Caitlin Conn features in the winter 2018 edition of “UGA Graduate,” the University of Georgia Graduate School magazine, for her position as captain on The Classic City Roller Girls derby team. Conn’s scientific research focuses on how changes in river flow impact ecological functions. Scientist by day and skater by night, Conn recently received the 2017 National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program Award (GRFP). When she is not working in the field or analyzing her research on campus, Caitlin Conn indulges in her passion for roller derby. In her featured article, Conn states, “Here at Odum I am supported and mentored by an incredible group of women scientists. I have found a different type of support through Derby, where I am challenged and lifted up by remarkable women athletes.” Since starting out in Syracuse, New York, she has worked her way up to “waging war on wheels” as the team captain of the local Athens team. Not only does Conn lead her team in competition, but in volunteer opportunities around the local community as well. As the 2018 derby season approaches, follow this link to read more about Caitlin Conn’s journey and her love for the diversity and community that roller derby has brought out in her team.
