March Third Wednesday | SELC’s Bill Sapp on WOTUS
We are very excited to have the Southern Environmental Law Center’s Bill Sapp come and present his talk Waters of the United States: Origins, Evolution, and the Trump Administration’s New Rule. The definition of the term “waters of the United States” specifies which types of aquatic resources are protected under the Clean Water Act. A major Supreme Court decision from 2006 on the parameters of this definition created significant confusion across the country as to which types of waters qualify for protection. The Obama Administration attempted to rectify this confusion with a new waters of the United States definition in its 2015 Clean Water Rule. The Trump Administration recently unveiled its own waters of the United States rule which would remove protections from some types of water resources. It’s quite convoluted but incredibly important! Bill Sapp is a Senior Attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center’s Atlanta office, where he specializes in wetlands and coastal issues. Prior to this position, he was the Lead Wetlands Attorney at EPA Region IV’s headquarters in Atlanta.
