J.P. Schmidt, “Managing Forested Wetlands as a Public Good” | Third Wednesday

J. P. Schmidt addresses the RBC on November 14, 2018.

The Odum School’s own J.P. Schmidt gave the November, 2018, Third Wednesday presentation on “Managing Forested Wetlands as a Public Good.” In his talk, J.P. explored the idea that bottomland hardwoods provide valuable ecosystem services that are not well captured in their valuation in terms of timber production. His analysis concluded that conversion of bottomlands to pine silviculture has reversed, according to recent imagery, as have timber removals in forested wetlands. The largest losses in acreage were due to agricultural conversion, while urban/suburban development has been relatively minor.
