Balancing water needs in South Georgia

CHALLENGE: Water from the Flint River Basin plays a vital role in Southwest Georgia’s agricultural productivity. In recent years, droughts have reduced the availability of water in the region, leading to historically low stream flows that impact both farmers and surrounding ecosystems.

RESPONSE: The GA Flow Incentive Trust connects researchers from the University of Georgia with farmers to develop drought response plans using the latest technology, establishing a path forward for both agriculture and freshwater ecosystems to thrive in Southwest Georgia.

TEAM: The research team includes Adam Milewski, Charlotte Garing, and Ervan Garrison of the Department of Geology within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Partners include the Georgia Water Planning & Policy Center, Georgia EPD, The Nature Conservancy, and Golden Triangle RC&D.
